Did I burn my clutch?

I drove my dad's camper van today (standard transmission), and I am very new to manuals. I live on a very steep hill so it always gives me trouble when I try to park there. I tried using the handbrake to keep from rolling backwards, and I don't think I completely disengaged it because I just pressed the on and let go I didn't press it down all of the way. The car wasn't really moving forward no matter what I was doing, and all of a sudden there was a horrible burning rubber smell and white smoke coming out of the back of the car (I don't think out of the exhaust pipe though). The fact that it would NOT move forward makes me think it was me leaving the handbrake engaged, but I was revving it like crazy so it might be the clutch. I stopped as soon as I noticed the smoke. Do you think the smell is coming from the clutch or the handbrake???? If it was the clutch, do I need to replace it?
